The West African Youths Council (also known as the ECOWAS Youths Council Sierra Leone Chapter) over the weekend engaged the Chairman and Leader of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on peace in Makeni.
The move was in pursuant of Council’s short term agenda of engaging all key players in the political and security sectors of Sierra Leone in achieving peace, national cohesion and violence-free Sierra Leone for its youth.
The engagement which took place in Koroma’s Makeni residence witnessed the exchange of professional experiences by both parties.
Erstwhile President of the Council, Ambassador Sheku Foryoh highlighted the numerous peace and security challenges the nation has been encountering recently, citing recent occurrences of violence and mutual confrontations between youth and security personnel in Makeni, Tombo and Lunsar among other areas which have always resulted to the senseless loss of innocent lives and properties.
He said as a responsible youth-led organization charged with the responsibility of promoting peace and development amongst youth in the West African Sub-Region, the Council is set to organize the first-ever International Peace Youth Dialogue and Security Dialogue slated for 21st September this year in Makeni and other parts of the across the country.
Former President Ernest Bai Koroma said the road to attaining lasting peace is long and rough, adding that: “Peace is never valued until there is chaos”.
He encouraged the young leaders to keep the torch of peace burning and be the change Sierra Leone is looking up to.
Mr. Koroma assured of his commitment to work with all key players in the security sector and also his continued moral, professional guidance and support to young people’s development.
