The National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) has informed journalists at a press conference held at their Charlotte Street headquarter in Freetown that the European Union has made commitment to support the government through NaCSA with 5.2 million US dollars to cushion the effects of the global Coronavirus under the institution’s social safety net program.
According to the Commissioner 70 thousand more households are set to benefit from over one million Leones each from the social safety net programme for vulnerable people being implemented by NaCSA.
The Commissioner emphasized that the said fund came as a result of their transparency in other programs that they have implemented for the people of Sierra Leone.
Regina Saffa the Director of Programs at NaCSA, noted that as Sierra Leone continues its fight against the global Coronavirus; the government of Sierra Leone through NaCSA is scaling up the amount and number of beneficiaries for the social safety net to 70,000 households with a cash package of one million, three hundred and fifty thousand Leones per household.
While responding to some of the critical discrepancies surrounding the COVID-19 cash transfer, the Director of Programs, Regina Saffa noted that social safety net is mainly for destitute people living in abject poverty and who are also persons with some form of disability.
She further explained that according to NaCSA, there are seventeen categories of persons with disability. She added that the commission together with their partners decided on these categories of disabled people to benefit from the social safety net program which the government is also supporting with four billion Leones.
The commission further explained that they will continue all other cash transfer projects as the ACC has exonerated NaCSA after concluding alleged corruption allegations.
