In commemoration of World Menstrual Day 2020, the Sierra Leone Association of Women in Journalist (SLAWIJ), donated Sanitary Pads, soap, toothbrush and Vaseline to forty-five women in quarantine homes in the Kono district.
The donation was witnessed by the Quarantine Home Manager and representatives from the Kono Women’s Network.
Admire Favour Yorpoi, a gender activist commended SLAWIJ for what she described as “a timely effort” and expressed that the organisation is the first to commemorate World Menstrual Hygiene Day in Kono district.
Women in the quarantine homes also expressed appreciation for the gesture and said SLAWIJ was the first organisation to come to their aid. Some of the women explained they have been in quarantine homes for over twenty-five days with numerous challenges. The donation was part SLAWIJ‘s ongoing community response to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Menstrual Hygiene Day 2020 is time for action. Every May 28, nonprofits, government agencies, the private sector, the media, and individuals come together to celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) and advocate for the importance of good menstrual hygiene management (MHM).
